Government rejects Amnesty International report
Sri Lanka government yesterday emphatically rejected the charges of humanitarian aid
blockage to the displaced people in the in the Wanni region, made by the Amnesty
International in its latest report released. Issuing a brief statement Presidential Secretariat said that the government is fully aware of the numbers of persons who need assistance.

Parliament should be ashamed -Kiriella
UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said Monday, Parliament should be ashamed of its failure to ensure the implementation of the Constitution. Speaking during the committee stage debate, Mr. Kiriella said that a petition seeking the implementation of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution had been taken up by the Supreme Court. This relates to the establishment of the Constitutional Council.

Army captured another tiger airstrip
Troops now advancing towards Paranthan following the victory in
Pooneryn have captured one of LTTE airstrips located in the Nivil area, Pooneryn this afternoon, the military said. Defense Ministry said that according to the sources in the
filed, the airstrip is about 200m in length and made by demarcating a strip of
the B-69 Pooneryn-Paranthan main road.

Heavy fighting in Nayaru
Seven Sea Tiger boats were completely destroyed by the Navy and the Air Force
and at least six LTTE cadres were killed off Nayaru, Mullaitivu, today morning,
military sources said. They said the LTTE casualties could be higher.air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said that the five boats
were destroyed by the Mi 24 helicopters.

No tax for local paddy production-Bandula
Government has
emphasized that no tax is imposed on local paddy production. Minister Bandula
Gunawardena said a 25 rupee tax on an imported kilo of rice was being levied to
protect the local paddy cultivator. Addressing Parliament, the Trade Minister
observed that last year’s paddy production was in the region of more than 1.9
million metric tons.

Fuel prices further down $52 per barrel
World crude oil prices slipped to $52.24 per barrel for Brent on Thursday while
the OPEC Basket was trading at $49.94, the Central Bank said. In the
Singapore Refined Products Market, petrol was offered at $40.10, diesel at
$67.60 and kerosene at $77.40.

Muralitharan's action not clean - Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist has said he believes Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan off spinner, has a suspect action, and blamed the ICC for allowing him bowl in international cricket.
